Yellow Toadflax: Linaria vulgaris, Mill.

 

Characteristics:

Family: Scrophulariaceae (Figwort Family)

Origin: Eurasia

Description:

• Perennial
• Introduced as an ornamental
• Reproduces by seeds and rootstock
• Aggressive and out competes native plants in their natural environment

Stems and Roots:

• Stems are erect
• Root systems are extensive containing large energy reserves making this weed difficult to control
• Grows up to 2 feet in height

Flowers:

• Flowers look similar to snapdragons
• Yellow one inch spurred flowers with an orange throat
• Bloom June-September
• Seed pods are dark brown with tiny seeds.  Seeds have a papery wing attached

Leaves:

• Numerous, narrow and pointed at both ends
• Usually leaves are less than 2 1/2 inches in length

Location:

    Yellow Toadflax is also known by some as butter and eggs.  It has escaped from gardens, and has invaded many acres of western native lands.  It is difficult to control because of its extensive root system and prolific seed production.  This weed is on the State's B list of noxious weeds species and must be managed to keep it from spreading to new areas.
