NOXIOUS WEED IDENTIFICATION

DIFFUSE KNAPWEED: Centaurea diffusa Lam.

Characteristics:

Family: Aster

Discussion:

Diffuse Knapweed is a member of the Aster family.  It is a winter annual, germinating in the Fall.  A rosette develops and in the early summer a central stem bolts upright with multiple, branching stems.  Flowers are usually white and sometimes pink or purple and are encompassed in a spiny bract.  This weed is a prolific seed producer, and scatters its seed by tumbling.  Diffuse Knapweed can be found along roadsides, disturbed areas and in dry rangeland.
