Field Bindweed: Convolvulus arvensis L.

 

Characteristics:

Family: Convolvulaceae (Morningglory)

Origin: Europe

Description:

  • Perennial
  • Has deep and extensive root systems
  • Reproduces by seeds which remain viable in the soil for 40-70 years

Stems:

  • Prostrate, but will climb and wind around fences or other plants
  • Usually multiple stems, 1-6 ft in legth

Flowers:

  • Usually white, but also occurs with pink or pink stripes
  • Bell or trumpet shaped flowers
  • Petals fused or united
  • Bloom occurs June-August
  • Seeds are produced in a small capsule, usually containing 4 seeds

Leaves:

  • Shaped like arrowheads
  • Arranged alternate along the stem
  • 3/4 inch to one inch in length

Location:

    Bindweed is very adaptable to any environmental conditions, and it will grow everywhere.  It is a common lawn and garden pest, and common in waste areas and in cultivated fields.  It will grow back after having been pulled, repeatedly.  Keep the seeds from forming or this weed will out live you!
