Venice mallow, Hibiscus trionum

 Characteristics:

Family: Malvaceae (Mallow Family)

Origin: Europe

Description:

  • Annual

  • Grows 10-18 inches in height

Stems:

  • Originate from central base

  • Covered in course hairs

  • Tend to spread

Flowers:

  • Sulfur yellow with a purplish black center

  • 1.5" in diameter

Leaves:

  • Leaves are cleft with 3-5 coarsely toothed lobes

Fruit:

  • Dark brown seed inside green and purplish papery sac-like structure

Additional information:

Typically found in waste areas, gardens, orchards and cultivated fields.  Also known as: bladder ketmia, flower-of-an-hour, rose mallow.
