Spurred anoda, Anoda cristata

 Characteristics:

Family: Malvaceae (Mallow family)

Origin: Native of the Southwest

Description:

  • Erect annual

Stems:

  • Branching at the base

  • 1/4 to 3 1/2 feet in height

Flowers:

  • Solitary on stalks

  • Purplish-red to bluish violet

  • 5 petals with obvious flower parts

Leaves:

  • Alternate, 1 1/2 to 3 inches long, triangular in shape with some arrow or lance shaped

Fruit:

  • Spike like carpels in clusters of 8-20 in the center of the fruit

Additional information:

Spurred anoda has spread outside of the Southwest and been troublesome in crops, gardens, ditches and along waste areas and roadsides.
