Arbor Day tree plantings scheduled

Broomfield celebrates Arbor Day each year in conjunction with area schools through a series of tree plantings. This year, the city’s Parks Division will plant trees during the week of April 13 to 18. National Arbor Day this year is April 24.

A special recognition is planned on Thursday, April 16, at the Emerald Elementary tree planting. Colorado State Forest Service will present Broomfield with its 20th consecutive Tree City USA award.  A Greenspire Linden tree will be planted as part of the celebration. Emerald School was chosen because, in 1982, it was the first school to celebrate Arbor Day with the then City of Broomfield.

Other celebrations include Tuesday, April 14, Broomfield Heights Middle School at 9 a.m. with the planting of a spring snow crabapple tree and 10:30 a.m. at Birch Elementary with the planting of a Chanticleer flowering pear tree.

On Friday, April 17, at 10:30 a.m. at Westlake Middle School and at 12:30 p.m. at Legacy High School, swamp white oak trees will be planted.

On Saturday, April 18, at 11 a.m., Cub Scout Troop 551, Den 4, will help plant a Shumardi oak tree at Country Estates Park.  At 1:30 p.m. that day, the annual Earth Day tree planting will be held in conjunction with the Earth Day for Kids program at the Broomfield Community Center.  A thornless Cockspur Hawthorn tree will be planted.
