Mentoring Valuable People program is a mentoring program for persons over the age of 18 who are interested in assisting  youth between 4th and 10th grades. 

What is a Mentor?
A Mentor is an ordinary person who cares, listens, develops caring friendship, builds confidence, is a role model for a young person.  A Mentor IS NOT a babysitter, a therapist, a rescuer or a surrogate parent.

Who Qualifies As a Good Mentor?
A person must be 18 years or older and who:

1.  Will demonstrate a ONE YEAR COMMITMENT to a child/youth
2.  Is willing to be a FRIEND
3.  Cares about the next generation of Broomfield citizens
4.  Is willing to go through a screening process
5.  Will commit to the project's training program.

Are There Other Ways to Become Involved With Broomfield MVP?
Broomfield HHS always welcomes volunteers and especially community members wishing to assist youth.  Other ways to become involved are:
1.  Donate tickets to a special event.
2.  Provide gift certificates from area businesses.
3.  Call us and discuss any ideas you might have.

Who Does the Broomfield MVP Mentor Program Help?
This program is designed to help Broomfield youth 4th through 10th grades who are at risk of at least one of the following:
1.  Family Problems - lack of parental supervision, abuse, neglect, family violence, criminal behavior of other family members, etc.
2.  Educational Problems - youth have truancy problems, failing grades in two or more classes, or identified as "at-risk" by school personnel.
3.  Substance Use or Abuse - alcohol or drugs.
4.  Delinquent or Pre-Delinquent Behavior - a pattern of involvement with law enforcement, running away from home, and/or gang activity.

Benefits of Mentoring
Research on mentoring programs has shown that children and youth have had a mentor.
1.  Graduate high school more frequently.
2.  Are less likely to start using drugs and alcohol.
3.  Become more involved in their community.
4.  Have fewer arrests.
5.  Enroll in college more frequently.
6.  Show improved school attendance, performance and attitudes toward completing school work.
7.  Have improved relationships with adults and peers.
8.  Are less likely to re-offend, if they were juveniles in the justice system.
