Family and Children's Services strives to provide services that are prevention-oriented, integrated, family-centered and research based. One of the primary goals of the division is preserving the family to maintain children safely in their own homes.

Child Protection Services

The Family and Children's Division serves the community through a wide range of services and programs.  Ensuring the safety, permanency and well-being for Broomfield's children is the primary goal of the Child Protection Services unit.

Adult Protection Services

The Adult Protection Services (APS) Program receives and investigates reports of mistreatment and self-neglect of at-risk adults.  Those who report mistreatment of at-risk adults remain anonymous and are immune from any civil or criminal liability if the report is made in good faith.  The APS Program is designed to intervene with or on behalf of at-risk adults to correct or alleviate situations in which actual or imminent danger of mistreatment and/or self-neglect exists and to utilize support systems to provide continuing safety from the incident(s) of mistreatment and/or self-neglect.

Foster Care, Kinship Care and Adoption

Broomfield Health and Human Services  works with community leaders to create successful strategies in an effort to support children who are in foster care. Foster care provides protective services for children. Foster Parents provide 24-hour temporary care for children who cannot remain in their own homes due to neglect, abuse, or other significant family problems.

Colorado Child Care Assistance Program

HHS participates in the Colorado Child Care Assistance Program (CCCAP) which provides financial child care assistance to eligible families.  Eligibility is based on household income, work status and/or participation in the Colorado Works Program.  The program also provides general information on child care assistance and referrals to child care providers and recruits, trains, and supports child care providers in the provision of services to families in need of child care subsidies.

United Families / Adoption Support

The United Families program provides support services to adopted children and their families who reside in Broomfield.  The program includes a family support network for adoptive families, including education and information sessions addressing topics of interest to the group.  Support and information groups are held in conjunction with neighboring counties.  United Families also provides referral resources to adoptive families with specific needs. For more information about the United Families program, contact the program coordinator at 720.887.2238.

Substance Abuse Intervention

The Family and Children's Services Division offers group education and early intervention for teens impacted by drug or alcohol use.  The division has a Substance Abuse Interventionist that helps teens develop an understanding of the negative influences of drugs and alcohol by learning the facts about substances and consequences of poor choices, examining the choices available to them, evaluating feelings and defenses, discussing family issues and peer pressure, and practicing positive stress management techniques.

Teens may be referred for intervention by parents, guardians, other family members, friends, schools, courts, or by themselves. Referrals should be made to Traci Hagie by calling (720) 887-2231 or emailing thagie@broomfield.org.

Nurturing Parenting Program

Nurturing Parenting services are offered through the Mental Health Partners.  The 16-week program which is offered two times per year is a free, family-centered program designed to help parents develop their nurturing skills.  The program emphasizes the value of unconditional love within the family.  The course teaches participants about basic child development and the processes that occur as the child grows.  Parents are taught the importance of offering children choices and showing children that they are loved and respected.  The research-based program helps parents be more empathetic and more nurturing.  Parents of children ages 0-5 years are invited to apply for this program.  Free infant and child care will be provided during these classes.

For more information about this class, which is offered two times per year, please call Uyen Bui-Anderson at (303) 466-3007 ext. 216. Volunteers are also needed to assist staff in providing care and coordinating activities for the children while the parents attend class.  If you are interested in volunteering, please call (720) 887-2227.

Broomfield Youth Recognition Award Program

The Broomfield Department of Health and Human Services, in partnership with CASA of Adams and Broomfield Counties and A Precious Child, manages the Broomfield Youth Recognition Award (BYRA) program. This program provides business, community, and civic leaders an opportunity to actively demonstrate their belief in and support for the young people in the community. The BYRA allows the greater Broomfield community to honor and acknowledge those youth who, despite adversity, achieved positive change in their lives. BYRA will recognize and celebrate these youth by providing them with an annual banquet and awards. Nominations are accepted in January and February and a banquet is held in the Spring to recognize nominated youth.
