2006 International Codes Adoption

The City and County of Broomfield is currently in the process of adopting the 2006 International Codes.  Building codes are updated every three years through an open consensus process to adapt to changing technology, current methods of construction, and in reaction to situations where codes may have failed to protect the public in the past.  Building inspection and plan review staff must constantly update their code knowledge and assist builders in meeting the most recent edition of these national codes, as adopted by the City and County of Broomfield.  Amendments will be made to the published codes in order to address Broomfield's unique conditions, philosophies, and policies.  These amendments will be available on this website after approval by city council and formal adoption by ordinance.  Linked below are brief summaries compiled of some of the more important and farthest reaching changes in the building codes between the 2003 and the 2006 editions:

Snow & Wind Loads:

Design roof snow load: 30.0 psf.  Assigned ground snow load: 30.0 psf

Design wind speed: 110 mph, 3 second gust
(Asphalt shingles shall be tested to ASTM D3161, using 110 mph)

 Wind structural design exposure classification is dependent upon location: 
either B or C - designer shall assess

Frost depth:  36 inches below finished grade.
